Pet Vaccinations From Your Portland Veterinarian

vaccinations

Many pet owners believe that vaccinations aren’t necessary if they have an indoor pet. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Regardless of your pet’s lifestyle habits, vaccinations are a vital aspect of caring for your pets. Our Portland veterinarian recommends that all pets get vaccinated to prevent potentially deadly diseases and infections, many of which can be transmitted to humans and other animals. At Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic in Portland, our vet offers a full range of core and non-core vaccinations.

Preventive Vaccinations for Cats and Dogs at Our Vet

Our vet Dr. Kenneth DeRemer is happy to explain to pet owners why these vaccines are so important. Diseases such as rabies, parvo, canine leptospirosis and distemper are easily transmittable between animals and are often fatal. Ensuring that you bring your puppy or kitten in for those initial shots and following up with boosters as recommended can literally save lives! Here is what Dr. DeRemer recommends during cat vaccination appointments and dog vaccination appointments.

Cat Vaccination Plans

Core vaccinations that our Portland veterinarian recommends for felines include a combination vaccine known as FVRCP to protect against feline viral rhinotracheitis, distemper and the calicivirus infection. We also highly advise that cats receive the rabies vaccine, and we’ll keep you informed when core vaccinations will require booster shots. Non-core vaccinations aren’t always necessary, and our vet will help you determine whether your cat’s lifestyle calls for additional protection against feline immune deficiency virus (FIV) and/or feline leukemia virus (FeLV).

Dog Vaccination Plans

A major component of our dog vaccination plan includes a combination vaccine known as the DHPP shot. This protects canines from serious conditions that include hepatitis, distemper, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. We also strongly recommend vaccinating dogs for leptospirosis, coronavirus, and rabies. If your dog spends time in boarding or enjoys grooming services, we advise considering a bordetella vaccination to prevent kennel cough.

Are Vaccinations Safe?

Amid all the controversy amid humans concerning the safety of vaccinations, many pet owners want to know if vaccines are safe for pets. Rest assured, these life-saving injections are safe, and very few pets experience any type of negative reaction to vaccines. Essentially, your vet is inserting inert substances into your pet’s system that will create antibodies that help resist the pathogens associated with certain diseases. Your furry friend will only experience a slight ‘pinching’ discomfort during the injections, and they can resume their normal activities right away once returning home.
