National Pet Cancer Awareness Month with Your Portland Veterinarian

pet cancer awareness

At Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic, we take great pride in being the area's trusted Portland veterinarian for cancer treatment, diagnosis, and more. And with November being National Pet Cancer Awareness Month, now is a good time to remind all pet owners of the signs and symptoms of common pet cancers as well as the treatment options available at our clinic.

Recognizing Common Symptoms of Dog Cancer and Cat Cancer

Most types of dog cancer and cat cancer occur later in life, around the age of 10 or older. Unfortunately, cancer is unpredictable and can sometimes occur even in younger and otherwise perfectly healthy pets. For this reason, all pet owners should take time to familiarize themselves with some of the common symptoms of cancer in pets.

Specific symptoms can vary based on the type of cancer, but some of the more telltale signs pet owners should watch out for include:

  • sudden and unexplained lethargy
  • difficulty or reluctance eating
  • unexplained sores that do not seem to heal
  • swellings or growths on the body
  • weight loss and/or loss of appetite

Cancer Treatment Options Available at Our Animal Hospital

In our animal hospital, we typically begin by diagnosing cancer through the use of a biopsy of any abnormal or unexplained growths on the body. If it turns out your pet does have cancer, the good news is that there are often viable cancer treatment options available.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the most common treatments for pet cancer, though surgical removal of a tumor or growth will first be required before these treatments can be utilized. Ultimately, the goal of these treatments is to bring on remission of cancer itself.

Schedule an Appointment with Our Portland Veterinarian

If your pet shows any signs of cancer, it's important that you schedule an appointment with our Portland veterinarian as soon as possible. Give us a call at (503) 285-7661 to set up your pet's appointment today.
